Jan Koetsier's compositions have their own particular place within the repertoire of brass players. The composer has given a special impulse to the study and performance of brass chamber music in the world of music. In 1993 Jan Koetsier endowed a foundation at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich in order to raise the international profile of brass chamber music. An important strand of this work is the organisation of the International Jan Koetsier Competition for brass chamber music, which takes place every two years.
